Where did it all start?
Maria Susana Cabrero was born in Mexico City and from the early age of 11 she started drawing horses using a pencil technique which, with time, she perfected, achieving the great detail and natural expression of the horses she drew. She has never owned a horse or taken an art class; all she knows about them has been gleaned from her own research, determination and love for this species.
This passion for horses has led her to branch out into a variety of medias like: colored pencils, water colors, pastels, oils, inks, and other mixed media which she has discovered and mastered to an excellent level, driven by her own self-motivation.
In 1997 in a group exhibition at a well known restaurant in Cuernavaca (Mexico) she exposed some of her paintings, obtaining great recognition for her art work, due to her strength and "the careful detail and expression of the horses".
Vicissitudes of life take her to live in the U.S.A., starting in California, where she obtained a few commissions from horse owners in 2000. Her clients were delighted with her work and recommended her to other sources.
Later, while living in Palms Springs, she applied for a full scholarship, which was granted to her by Karen Kasper, founder of "The Kasper Foundation for Equine Art", taking her to Taos, New Mexico, in 2002. There she was exposed to sculpture, which she enjoyed greatly, showing an immense innate ability due to her previous research, love for art, and that which experience had given her.
Her favorite horse breeds are the "Arab & Thoroughbred" for she finds in these animals not only an incredible elegance, but also great beauty, intelligence, good nature, and a friendly temperament which are expressed mainly in their eyes; for her, "the eye of a horse is the window to its soul".
A few months ago she moved to Ocala, Florida from Miami, where she continues reading, learning, painting, experimenting and sculpting many of the magnificent equine species.
Maria Susana has sold several paintings that have traveled as far as Puerto Rico and many other parts of Mexico.
Recently she was mentioned on Horses in Art magazine in the "Artist’s Bits", also she won the 3rd place in the 2007 cover contest of the same magazines and entered a contest at the Marion County Office. Her painting was one of the winners; all selected artwork will be displayed at the Commissioners Auditorium for a year.
She continues with a constant self-training discipline to keep on portraying horses with sculpting, drawing and painting, to allow her to do what she loves most in life.
